First time out mountain (hill) biking in about twenty years. I was able to find a route all the way from my street to my job completely through the mountain preserve (about 12 miles). Not sure I’d be able to teach afterwards, but I’ll work up to it. I was a little skiddish on some of the big drops, but managed to not eat shit. Really glad I found a 29er, because there are some decent sized rocky ridges and a couple of patches of loose shale which would have probably dumped me on smaller wheels. Time for a beer.

Phoenix mountains. Thankfully not too many chollas. My uncle once crashed an ATV into a pack of them. That was a fun week for him.

Looks like an awful way to get to and from work...do it again...and again and again!

I went for a nature walk in nearby Soledad Canyon and am now enjoying a beer at a new taproom in town. I’m willing to drink it on your behalf.

I just finished up a soil and groundwater contamination lecture, and am now enjoying an Arizona Trail Ale. ¡Salud!

I keep pushing my local breweries to brew a beer specifically for drinking after long runs or exercise. More studies are coming out saying that beer could be the basis for the theoretical “best” recovery drink.

Nice. I’m getting my masters in Environmental Resource Management with a focus on water management. I mi ght have to pick your brain a bit.
Just starting out on a research project which involves me doing some consulting for a real estate developer who’s looking at how they can create a “green” development at a unique spot in Nevada.

Feel free to pick my brain at any time, but I suspect you know more than I do! Right now I seem to specialize in making things that I suspect are probably an issue sound better for clients who would rather they just disappear.
Meanwhile I at least get to poke around places I’d never go otherwise. Had a lovely drive up Highway 60 to Miami and got some locals going on about the mines. I wish I’d had time for a hike.

Gotcha’. That’s some old school ‘Zona. I’d really like to get involved at cleaning up all the uranium tailings from the mines in northern Arizona. Shits been poisoning people for half a century now.

Funny, I’ve been down a rabbit hole on the Navajo uranium mines since I got home. It’s really unfathomable what’s still not even fenced off, much less anywhere near being cleaned up.
Unrelated, I’m in Leadville, CO pretty regularly for the running and mountain bike races and I feel like every race there’s some parent ignoring their child while they play in a tailings pile. They aren’t radioactive, but heavy metals aren’t particularly great for small kids either.

Yeah, there’s still wells being used that are contaminated because people have no other source of water. The rates of neural and kidney disease on the Navajo nation are pretty high as a result. The uranium mining ban ended as well, so I’m sure the problem will continue to get worse.
